Ponferrada: The City of the Templars
Travel Designer Review:
The second day will be dedicated to exploring the surroundings of Ponferrada, starting with a visit to Las Médulas. This impressive landscape, declared a UNESCO World Heritage site, is the result of ancient Roman gold mining. The spectacular reddish rock formations contrast with the lush vegetation, creating a scenery that seems like it's out of this world. You can explore several trails that lead to viewpoints such as Orellán, where you'll get an unparalleled panoramic view of Las Médulas. Don't forget to bring your camera to capture the beauty of this unique place.
A very particular place to visit on a tour of Europe.
We will continue our journey towards the Valley of Silence, a place of serene and mystical beauty. This valley, with its green mountains and peaceful corners, is perfect for a relaxing walk and to enjoy the peace that only nature can offer. Here, in the heart of the valley, lies the Monastery of San Pedro de Montes, an ancient Benedictine monastery surrounded by silence and serenity. Walking along its paths is a rejuvenating experience, where each step connects you with the purest essence of El Bierzo.
For those who wish to continue exploring, a walk along the Sil River is a wonderful option. The riverbank trails offer spectacular views and the opportunity to see the local flora and fauna in their natural habitat. You can start your walk at the Bárcena reservoir and follow the course of the river, enjoying the tranquility of the surroundings. It's an ideal way to conclude our journey, savoring the serenity and beauty of this special corner of Spain.
