Day 5 - Train to Machu Picchu and accommodation in the town of Machu Picchu.
Train to Machu Picchu from Cusco/Urubamba/Ollantaytambo

The most common way to get to the town of Machu Picchu is on one of the scenic trains operated by the companies IncaRail (https://incarail.com/) or PeruRail (https://perurail.com/). Both companies are good and offer different classes in their train cars.

The journey to Machu Picchu is incredible. It is known as one of the most beautiful scenic train routes in the world. The train passes through snowy mountains alongside a river and the forest. Therefore, it is highly recommended to take the journey when there is sunlight.

The town of Machu Picchu is very small and there are not many things to do. For this reason, I recommend taking the train in the morning between 8 am and 12 pm to arrive and spend the afternoon. The next day, visit Machu Picchu early in the morning, and then return in the afternoon.

There are trains that depart very early (from 4:00 am) because many people do not stay in the town of Machu Picchu and make the round trip in just one day. If that's your case, take the earliest possible schedule. I enjoyed sleeping in the town of Machu Picchu and entering the park at 6 am to see the sunrise and then climb the Wayna Picchu mountain.

Trains to Machu Picchu depart from three main stations:

  • Cusco/Poroy - The Cusco station is not actually in Cusco. It is located in Poroy, which is 13 kilometers from Cusco. These 13 kilometers are covered in 30 minutes, and the cost of a taxi is around 25 soles (8 dollars).
  • Urubamba - Only PeruRail has departures from Urubamba.
  • Ollantaytambo - This is the closest station to Machu Picchu. If you are staying in Urubamba or elsewhere in the Sacred Valley, you will have to take a taxi to Ollantaytambo. You can ask your hotel to help you with the transfer organization. A local taxi is more economical and will charge you around 30 soles. A private transfer costs about 30 USD.

Secret information: upon booking this itinerary the Travel Designer reveals additional information with tips.

Depending on your arrival time at the train station, you will have more or less time in the town of Machu Picchu.

Many people who arrive early make their first expedition to Machu Picchu upon arrival, stay overnight in Machu Picchu, and then return to the park the next day. Keep in mind that the park closes at 5:30 pm.

The town of Machu Picchu is a tourist town and the value for money is generally not so great. The beauty of Machu Picchu town is that it is located in a very beautiful natural area.

For those who book any of my travel itineraries to Peru with this activity, I will share some activities that you can do in the town of Machu Picchu.

The value-for-money relationship in the Town of Machu Picchu (Aguascalientes) is generally poor. It is a tourist town, so the supply is fully aimed at tourists. For those who book one of my itineraries with this activity, I will suggest some dining options in the Town of Machu Picchu.

Summary

Get ready for an unforgettable experience in Peru with this travel itinerary that covers the most emblematic tourist destinations: Lima, Cusco, the Sacred Valley, and the majestic Machu Picchu! This journey has been meticulously designed to offer you the best of Peru in one trip. This is one of the classic Peru travel itineraries.

Start your adventure in the vibrant capital of Peru, Lima. I suggest spending a full day here, in addition to your arrival day. This planning will not only allow you to acclimatize but also give you the opportunity to explore the city's rich history and culture. I also recommend booking your flight from Lima to Cusco for the following morning. This is crucial as morning flights to Cusco, a mountainous region, tend to have fewer complications.

To maximize your experience and save on costs, I advise purchasing a multi-destination flight from your home city to Lima and then from Cusco back to your home. Subsequently, buy the flight from Lima to Cusco separately. National airlines offer very competitive rates, allowing you to save without sacrificing comfort.

During your trip, you will enjoy accommodations of upper-middle and superior categories, ensuring comfort and quality at each destination. These hotels have been carefully selected to offer you a pleasant and memorable stay.

By booking this itinerary, you will not only have access to a perfectly structured tour but also receive exclusive tips that will enrich your experience. These additional tips will make your trip even more rewarding.

Don't wait any longer and embark on this unique adventure through Peru! Your dream trip awaits you with unforgettable moments and stunning landscapes.
