Time to leave.

I recommend having breakfast at your accommodation and then leaving towards Manuel Antonio. I’ve listed multiple ways of getting there. Just make sure to keep an eye on the timetable and the duration of the trip. Also, don’t worry about food. The busses will make short stops along the way. This is often near a place where you can grab something to eat.

Arriving to Manuel Antonio and Getting a beach vibe!

Getting a beach vibe!

After that flight, getting through customs, and having a bus or taxi ride that lasted quite a few hours, it’s time to relax. So drop off your suitcases, take a shower and enjoy your first afternoon/evening in Costa Rica.

There are two places in Manuel Antonio which I can highly recommend. Of course, there is a difference in price class and style, but they have both made me feel very welcome, and they are both very professional.

  • Oceans Two Resort - A middle to upper-class resort where you can enjoy a holiday in luxury. It is located near the beach with beautiful views from your room. No kids under 12 are allowed.
  • Selina - A beautiful hostel focusing on the nomadic travelers, creating a place where you can meet new people and enjoy activities together. All ages are accepted.

Still some sunlight left..?

Depending on what time you arrived to Manuel Antonio, you might still have some sunlight left for today. For some, this could be a great time to sit alongside the pool and let all the travel stress float away. However, for me this is a moment to stretch my legs after having to sit down for so long.

  • The beach - Playa Espadilla is the main beach of Manuel Antonio. Within a short walk, you’ll be able to enjoy a cold beer, some cocktails, and a beautiful sunset.
  • The walk - Since Manuel Antonio is really small, you could potentially see the whole town in one small hike. So keep your eyes and ears open while walking. Although I have suggested some restaurants in this itinerary, you might find something else which suits your taste.

Dinner

Although there are plenty of great restaurants nearby, I’d recommend you to eat at your accommodation for the first night. This is something I often do to meet other travelers and tourists on my first night. They might be great company for some shared activities the next few days, or they might have some great advice about where to eat and what to do.

Summary

This itinerary is about a tour of one of my favorite coastlines—the west coast of Costa Rica. The country is famous for its amazing surf, volcanos, national parks, wildlife diversity, great climate and of course for its lifestyle of ‘Pura Vida’.

My name is Luuk van Garderen. I moved to Costa Rica after almost ten years of backpacking around the world, experiencing the hostel- and van life, doing volunteer work for food and accommodation, and surfing as much as possible, trying to experience everything this world has to offer. I have met lots of amazing people and gained heaps of fantastic experiences throughout my years of traveling.

Since I love traveling, hospitality and writing, it seemed logical to become a travel designer. This way, I could use my experiences and knowledge to help others get the most out of their journey.

Costa Rican has world-class waves, an amazing climate, and just way too much to see and do. I try to include the best variety of activities per location, good advice, and some locals-only information in my itineraries. There will be different options, and when necessary, don’t hesitate to contact me. (Important advice before booking your flight…! Decide if you want to enter and exit the country through the same airport. Traveling within Costa Rica can be time-consuming. It would make sense to land in San Jose for this itinerary and book your return ticket from Liberia Airport. However, if this is not possible, don’t worry, I’ll provide you with other options too).
