Day 7 - Manuel Antonio to Tamarindo
Time for a road trip, Manuel Antonio - Tamarindo

This is going to be a tough one. As much as I’d like to tell you that Costa Rica is small (this is true) and very easy to travel through, this is not the case. There are basically three different options when going from Manuel Antonio to Tamarindo.

  1. Depending on your budget you might have rented a car for your holiday. If this is your plan, I recommend doing this in San Jose. The rental places are cheaper in San Jose, and this way, you can have the same pick-up and drop-off location. This saves you some money! (Tip1: beware of the hidden costs. They often make it look very cheap, but once you get to the checkout, you’ll have to pay heaps of hidden insurance costs. It’s usually more affordable to rent your car online before you start your journey) (Tip 2: make sure to never leave any valuables in the rental car. These cars are often targeted by people searching to steal something valuable).
  2. Less expensive, but with less freedom. In Costa Rica, you can hire mini-vans. The sites which I pointed out earlier can help you with booking one. The cost to go from Manuel Antonio to Tamarindo is around $300.- USD. This might vary depending on the season. The big advantage is that they pick you up at your accommodation and drop you off wherever you like. The duration of the drive is about 5 hours.
  3. Super cheap, but insanely slow. If you consider yourself a patient person or have plenty of time to travel around Costa Rica, give the busses a try. This way, it’ll only cost you around $10.- to go from Manuel Antonio to Tamarindo. However, it’s going to cost you about 14 hours altogether. First, you have to take the bus to San Jose, and there you can take the bus to go to Tamarindo. Depending on how early you’d like to leave Manuel Antonio, you might have to book a night in San Jose.
Welcome to Tamarindo!

You'll be near the beach no matter which accommodation you have chosen. However, there are some accommodations which I can highly recommend!Depending on your budget, one of the following might be a good option for you.

  • Best Western Tamarindo Vista VillasThis beautiful place has excellent value for its price! It’s a middle to upper-class accommodation. Every villa and most of the rooms have an ocean view, and there is a big swimming pool with a swim-up bar! The pool also has an ocean view.
  • Occidental TamarindoThis resort is basically on the beach. It’s an upper-class resort on the outskirts of Tamarindo. It is right at Langosta and Cape Town, which are two less crowded spots in Tamarindo! The resort has a swimming pool, bar, and onsite dining options (one of their restaurants makes amazing seafood!).

You have just had a journey of at least 5 hours. I hope that you’ve enjoyed the view along the way! However, there are a few action-packed days ahead of you so I’d recommend you to bring your luggage to your accommodation and to go for a nice stroll.

Tamarindo in the Pacific Coast of Costa Rica, a different beach.

Tamarindo has an entirely different vibe than Manuel Antonio. After enjoying the beautiful tranquility of the Manuel Antonio national park, it’s time to enjoy some good food, surf, and drinks in Tamarindo. While walking around Tamarindo on your first day, try to reach the beach before sunset. There will be people selling ‘Coco Loco,’ this is a coconut with alcohol. Sit down and enjoy a drink while watching the sunset.

Dinner in Tamarindo

One of the places where I really like to go for some food is El Mercadito Tamarindo Food Court. This place houses multiple little restaurants/kitchens, all with their own style of food. There is no table service, but you can walk around, order something and take a seat at any of the many tables.

Summary

This itinerary is about a tour of one of my favorite coastlines—the west coast of Costa Rica. The country is famous for its amazing surf, volcanos, national parks, wildlife diversity, great climate and of course for its lifestyle of ‘Pura Vida’.

My name is Luuk van Garderen. I moved to Costa Rica after almost ten years of backpacking around the world, experiencing the hostel- and van life, doing volunteer work for food and accommodation, and surfing as much as possible, trying to experience everything this world has to offer. I have met lots of amazing people and gained heaps of fantastic experiences throughout my years of traveling.

Since I love traveling, hospitality and writing, it seemed logical to become a travel designer. This way, I could use my experiences and knowledge to help others get the most out of their journey.

Costa Rican has world-class waves, an amazing climate, and just way too much to see and do. I try to include the best variety of activities per location, good advice, and some locals-only information in my itineraries. There will be different options, and when necessary, don’t hesitate to contact me. (Important advice before booking your flight…! Decide if you want to enter and exit the country through the same airport. Traveling within Costa Rica can be time-consuming. It would make sense to land in San Jose for this itinerary and book your return ticket from Liberia Airport. However, if this is not possible, don’t worry, I’ll provide you with other options too).
